As Practitioner Scholar, Dr James Lau brings his wide range of knowledge and skill set to our Clients here at Robinsons, Lawyers. Having been previously employed by both well-established firms as well as working as in-house counsel of listed company in Hong Kong, Dr Lau is the commercial law expert in our firm, being able to understand and formulate solutions custom tailored to each individual client’s commercial needs.

Dr Lau is also known for being the founding member and chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translation and has been a vocal advocate for legal bilingualism.

  • Sunlink International Holdings Limited – Acting as Executive Director for 5 years in charge of the human resources and administration of Sunlink Group including all the subsidiaries and factories in mainland China, participated in the business planning and strategy of Global Positioning System and Intelligent Appliances, participated in acquisition and investment projects.
  • Juntaiyang Software Technology (Shenzhen) Limited – Acting as statutory representative for 2 years and was in charge of the operation of the software design house, overseeing the software development and intellectual property registration.
  • Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translation Limited – Building up and training a legal translation team,advocate for Legal Bilingualism.
  • Advised and Successfully Represented a Health Care Supply Chain headquartered in Hong Kong in a Tender Dispute (under the World Trade Organization Government Procurement Agreement) before the Review Body on Bid Challenges (Estimated Procurement Value in the Region of HK$90,000,000.00).
  • In one of the world’s first Cryptocurrency Disputes, Dr Lau acted for one of the world’s leading Bitcoin Exchange (worth over US$100 billion) (the “Bitcoin Exchange”) in a High Court action against a PRC based company specializing in Bitcoin Mining Hardware (the “Bitcoin Mining Company”). Upon taking charge of the case on behalf of the Bitcoin Exchange, in a stunning reversal, Robinsons, Lawyers Successfully Defeated the Bitcoin Mining Company’s attempt to retain a Default Judgment (on the ground of material non-disclosure by the Plaintiff’s Solicitors) with the Court subsequently imposing a severe Adverse Cost Order against the Bitcoin Mining Company.
